"Totems or spirit animals have roots in many ancient cultures
and belief systems, and in some the seagull was viewed as a significant
symbolic creature. Its appearance as a spirit animal during times of
desperation was said to represent the presence of opportunity even in
the most unlikely of places, of resourcefulness and the ability to adapt
to solve problems by looking at issues with a new perspective, to turn
things around to one's advantage. Similarly, it is also said to be a
sign to do the things that one has always wanted to do but has been
too wary to try, to make a change from an unfulfilling routine. Life
is too short for regretting 'what might have been'.
The seagull is therefore a creature that can represent hope, positivity,
and a fearless attitude especially when times are hard, symbolically
shown in this image by such things as the derelict pier, the sign on
the bin ('no access beyond this point'), the gathering storm clouds...
I waited ages for the gull to make its way to the center of the pier
to achieve a significant prominent position that also kept the symmetrical
elements strong, and I was very happy to catch its wings just so, like
angel wings. The wings have the happy coincidence of mimicing the design
of the streetlamps."
