Incertitudinal (left) and Reach Out (right) - by Greig Clifford.

Throughout the summer of 2023 these two photographs were part of an excellent exhibition themed around mental health held on the beach in Brighton, UK... a collaboration between Sussex Neuroscience (Sussex University) and Brighton & Hove Camera Club, as part of the British Neuroscience Association's Bring Your Own Brain Brighton event that year.

The Sussex Neuroscience / Brighton and Hove Camera Club Mental Health Photography Exhibition, Brighton Beach, April - September 2023

I was incredibly proud to be involved with this exhibition as I feel themes around the mind and mental health are a fundamental part of my photography practice.

I received an overwhelming amount of compliments for these photographs, both from those in the field of neuroscience and from the general public too, so when it was time for the exhibition to end I really wanted to see if I could find a way for the prints to be seen elsewhere, hopefully in a way that may encourage conversation and understanding of the issues surrounding mental health.

I am now pleased that both the prints from that exhibition have found a new home with the mental health charity West Sussex Mind, in one of their meeting rooms at their Pathfinder support hub in Littlehampton.

West Sussex Mind is an independent local charity who do vital work offering advice and support to improve physical and mental well-being, strengthen self esteem and confidence, and promote strong relationships with family, friends and community. They also help people get into education, training or work, to achieve their goals.

There are comprehensive training programs available for parents and carers, with specialist training for professionals such as those in eductation, GP practices, and leisure centres, for example. Bespoke training programs are run for managers and staff in companies and other organisations too.

As mental health issues can affect people of all ages and from any background, the charity works in the community to raise awareness, increase understanding and tackle the associated stigmas that continue to affect so many lives.

West Sussex Mind is a member of the Pathfinder alliance of organisations that together provide a single point of access to mental health and wellbeing support.
